The first University of Kentucky Bass Fishing Team qualifying tournament took place on Sunday Oct. 6th on Green River Lake in Campbellsville, KY. Everyone who came out to compete braved harsh weather conditions with some very strong wind and on and off thunderstorms.

Andrew Day was able to prevail as he caught a mixed limit of bass weighing 7lbs 9.8 ozs. Andrew caught the majority of his fish by alternating between a weightless fluke and a spinnerbait while targeting the boat docks throughout the lake. “I was able to catch numbers of fish on the fluke but my bigger fish came on the spinnerbait” said Andrew during the after tournament interview. With this early win in the team qualifying tournaments Andrew jumps out to an early but slim lead in the team angler of the year standings.

Trevor Howard was able to secure second place with three solid fish weighing in at 6lbs even. Trevor was targeting the many bluff walls that surround Green River Lake. Trevor caught his better fish on a weightless fluke while bringing in two solid smallmouth he caught on a 1/4oz texas rigged chigger crawl. Trevor mentioned that “Wind blown bluff walls seemed to be the ticket, while also focusing on the bluff points”.

Ryan Collins rounded out the top three with one solid bass that weighed in at 4lbs 2.6ozs. Ryan took advantage of the early shad activity by throwing a XCalibur Zell Pop in small main lake pockets. After the tournament Ryan stated “I was able to catch a lot of fish today just could not locate the bigger fish. With the overcast and windy conditions I threw topwater for the majority of the day, I just did not get the key bites I needed”.

With three more qualifying tournaments left there is still plenty of room for anglers to make major moves in the angler of the year standings. The next qualifying tournament will take place on October 20th on Barren River Lake.
